Because of my athletic career, I have chronic neck pain along with a host of other body problems. Ryan takes the time to not only take care of my neck and spine, preventing more serious injuries that I have flirted with in the past, but also helps me recover and prevent or treat other minor injuries that I sustain during training.
E-Stim therapy has several different techniques and options. We offer both T.E.N.S. and Electronic Muscular Stimulation (ESM).
What is T.E.N.S. Therapy?
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is the use of low-voltage electrical stimulation of the muscles for relief and improved healing. This device takes advantage of your body's natural communication with muscles provide drug-free relief from injuries.
We feature a particular type of T.E.N.S. therapy: Compex - a Swiss form of e-stim technology, used by a variety of elite level athletes.
What is ESM Therapy?
Electronic Muscular Stimulation (ESM) is a supplemental form of muscle stimulation therapy technology which uses precise electronic currents to reteach muscles appropriate and healthy firing patterns, reducing the possibility of future injury.
Who Can Benefit from E-Stim Therapy?
E-Stim therapy is useful for a variety of patient situations. Whether you have injured yourself or you simply want to improve your training recovery time, strategic use of T.E.N.S. can augment your physical results. T.E.N.S therapy is part of a whole health approach that can help you manage your sports injury or training fatigue in a way that is natural, safe, and effective.
This therapy is also particularly helpful for developing athletes (approx ages 10-15). Growing pains experienced by athletes at these ages can stress the joint and the muscle as the bone changes. We use these therapies to release oxytocin to offer relief from growing pains, and also to teach the growing muscle to develop in a neat and organized manner.
The chiropractic benefits of e-stim therapy include the reduction and/or elimination of:
- Knee Pain
- Elbow Pain
- Lower Back Pain
- Shoulder pain
- Muscle fatigue
- Muscle Spasm
- Training Recovery
- Pinched Nerves
How do we use E-Stim Units?
E-stim units are designed to be used for short periods of time to add to a complement of pain management therapies as well as to reteach patterns of muscle firings. We use these when working with athletes who have developed deficient muscle firing patterns. These patterns can cause various types of sports injuries.
These units can be used as-needed, but unlike pain medication, they are not limited to a specific frequency. We offer in-office treatment, and we also have T.E.N.S. units available for purchase.
What should I expect?
When you come in for an E-Stim visit, we will sit you comfortably in a chair and apply the e-stim unit to the relevant area. We will use a personalized set of electrodes for your treatment. We then set the unit to the desired level of conductivity to test the unit for your body. You should feel a tingling sensation, like pins and needles, in addition to the heat from the unit.
Each treatment lasts approximately 15 minutes, and at the end of the visit, you should feel pain relief and improved function of the injured or stressed area.
How long does it last?
Relief from this e-stim therapy visit should last anywhere from hours to days. Ideally, this type of therapy is to be used in conjunction with other treatments to speed your body's natural healing progress.
