Sleep apnea is a disorder that affects approximately 15 million Americans (about 1 in every 15 people). The disorder creates shallow breaths or pauses in breathing during sleep. Sufferers don’t get enough air gets to the lungs, resulting in poor sleep and health issues. It may also cause the person to snore loudly, waking themselves, and/or their partner up from restful sleep.

If you or someone you know (and sleep next to) suffers from sleep apnea, they may use a CPAP. The Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP, machine is a treatment for sleep apnea (and other breathing issues) that uses air pressure to keep airways open. Patients adjust the machine to fit on their head and face. The device pushes air into the nose and mouth to support regular breathing. With a CPAP, sleep apnea sufferers get better sleep and required air into their lungs.

Some sleep apnea is a result of bulky throat tissue, collapsing of air tubes or even the brain’s communication to keep airways open during sleep. This condition has a significant negative impact on health, with snoring linked to stroke and hypertension.

How do you know if you have sleep apnea?

Many sufferers may not know they have this condition unless they are observed by someone else. If you observe these symptoms, talk to your doctor:

  • A sore throat upon waking
  • Loud snoring
  • Waking abruptly from sleep by choking or gasping for air
  • Low energy and feeling tired through the day
  • Insomnia and/or restless sleep

Does Chiropractic Care Help Sleep Apnea?

Those suffering from sleep apnea can benefit from chiropractic adjustments of the neck to support the muscles and soft tissues in the area. This can help reduce tension and promote better breathing. Collapsing of the air tubes could be happening as a result of a misalignment in the neck, shoulders and skull.

Additionally, chiropractic can resolve other problems that can further complicate the condition, including sinus congestion, lung, thyroid and liver functions which can support overall health to reduce inflammation, digestive problems and more.
